At RFPS, our broad and balanced curriculum inspires pupils to learn. We strive to ensure that our children acquire knowledge, understanding and skills in all aspects of their education and believe that offering balance, breadth and depth is key to this.
It is our underlying belief that every child should feel valued and experience the feeling of success in a wide range of curriculum areas. We believe that through the curriculum we can impact on what is in children’s heads and how they feel about themselves, we aim to ensure that they feel confident and ready to tackle any challenge they may face.
Our curriculum is balanced to ensure every child receives an appropriate mix of high academic expectations in the core subjects enabling them to reach national expectations and be well prepared for the next stage of their education whilst also achieving our key priority to provide a full and rich curriculum which has an excellent range of experiences, facilitates learning through an exciting topic each half term, gives a wide range of high quality enrichment opportunities and allows all children to shine.
Our SMSC provision is well developed and thought out. We ensure that all children are well cared for and supported, whilst helping them to understand and make links with the diverse local and global community in which we live. We place high priority on ensuring children’s physical and mental wellbeing are met. We understand that children will not be successful learners unless they are emotionally secure, therefore mental well being is integral to what we do. We appreciate that sometimes we need a flexible approach to respond to any issues which may arise. Children’s physical and mental wellbeing are as valued and important as academic development.
Our curriculum offers breadth to ensure every child is ready to successfully meet the challenges of the next stage of their lives. Our priority is to ensure that we provide experiences which show the range of possibilities available to our children, help them to become independent and resourceful learners and provide an environment where our children know their responsibilities and feel positive about contributing to the world around them due to their deep understanding of differences and similarities between people and communities.
Our ethos enables all our children to benefit from a full range of academic, spiritual, moral, social and cultural activities. These activities enrich their lives and those of our whole school community and make them proud of their British values and the diverse society to which they belong and play an active part. We are proud that our curriculum gives our children the skills, confidence and self-belief to lead a happy and fulfilled life by encouraging them to aspire to be the best imagined and dream big!
Our curriculum offers depth to learning which enables children to apply their learning to different situations and to everyday life. We build in many opportunities for repetition, practice, reasoning and problem solving which allows children to gradually develop a deeper understanding of the skills and processes within subjects, at their own pace and in the best possible way for each individual child.
Our curriculum is designed and planned to move the nature of children’s thinking to a higher order, deep level of understanding, rather than just acquiring new facts and knowledge.
Overall, our well planned, rich curriculum ensures that our children have the opportunity to access a broad and balanced curriculum where depth is key and the children are equipped with the necessary skills to be independent learners, prepared for the future ahead of them and gaining the necessary skills currently to make rapid progress with National Curriculum requirements.
