At Rugby Free Primary, PSHE lessons are taught once a week however the themes of friendship, keeping safe and other aspects of PSHE are taught across the curriculum so that this is embedded within all aspects of the children’s learning. PSHE topics are also covered in our value assemblies and ‘Picture News’ class assemblies, where a picture provokes discussions about current news stories at a child friendly level.
As a school, we follow ‘Jigsaw PSHE’. Jigsaw is a scheme of work, aiming to prepare children for life, helping them really know and value who they truly are and understand how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world. Children have lots of fun within PSHE lessons often learning through circle time discussions and drama activities.
Every year group follows the same topics of learning each term, however the learning is tailored to the children’s age and stage. The children gain a deeper understanding of the topic each year as they revisit these topics. This ensures progression of skills and knowledge.
The topics are:
Being Me in My World Includes understanding my place in the class, school and global community as well as devising Learning Charters.
Celebrating Difference Includes anti-bullying (cyber and homophobic bullying included) and diversity work.
Dreams and Goals Includes goal-setting, aspirations for yourself and the world and working together.
Healthy Me Includes drugs and alcohol education, self-esteem and confidence as well as healthy lifestyle choices.
Relationships Includes understanding friendship, family and other relationships, conflict resolution and communication skills.
Changing Me This puzzle includes sex and relationships education in the context of coping positively with change.
