At RFPS we have adopted the mastery approach through the use of White Rose Maths to teach mathematics so that we teach for secure and deep understanding of mathematical concepts through manageable steps.
The National C states that ‘Mathematics is an interconnected subject in which pupils need to be able to move fluently between representations of mathematical ideas.’
We believe in helping engender an appreciation of human creativity and achievement.
We have chosen to follow the White Rose Maths scheme because it allows us to teach our pupils the knowledge and skills progressively to allow our pupils to move through concrete, pictorial and abstract mathematical concepts. The heart of our mathematical teaching and learning is conceptual understanding and developing fluency. By becoming fluent and able to recall key facts and skills quickly and efficiently our pupils are able to reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry and develop and present a justification/proof using mathematical language and examples. Our pupils solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems with increasing sophistication, including in unfamiliar contexts and to model real-life scenarios. Our vision is for our pupils to aim high, achieve together and celebrate success both in the classroom and beyond their life in primary education. With our maths curriculum we intend to embed the skills needed for our pupils to develop their knowledge of careers and awareness of finances, enterprise, and entrepreneurship.
