Phonics
At Rugby Free Primary School, we value reading as a key life skill, and are dedicated to enabling our pupils to become lifelong readers and succeed beyond their primary education.
The systematic teaching of phonics has a high priority throughout the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1. We acknowledge that children need to be taught the key skills in segmenting and blending to be equipped with the knowledge to be able to move from learning to read onto reading to learn.
We believe in helping engender an appreciation of human creativity and achievement.
We also highly value and encourage the pupils to read for enjoyment and recognise that this starts with the foundations of acquiring letter sounds, segmenting and blending skills. Our vision indicates 'aiming high’ for children to acquire the essential knowledge and skills needed to develop a love of reading. We use Read Write Inc program for the teaching of phonics.
